WNFC Championship Matchup Set: Rebellion and Spartans Advance to IX Cup

The stage is set.

After two physical conference championship battles, the Women’s National Football Conference has crowned its 2026 conference champions. The San Diego Rebellion claimed the Western Conference title, while the Texas Elite Spartans captured the Eastern Conference crown, setting up a blockbuster IX Cup Championship matchup on June 21 at Ford Center at The Star, live on ESPN2.

In a first for the league, both conference championship games host city teams made it to the finals of the tournament. In an equally ironic twist, both home teams fell, proving once again that playoff football is a different game.

Rebellion Defense Dominates in Utah

The Western Conference Championship between the San Diego Rebellion and Utah Falconz was exactly what many expected: a physical, defensive slugfest between two punishing teams.

The first half was defined by turnovers, with the two clubs combining to throw five interceptions before halftime. Possessions were hard to come by, and every mistake carried enormous consequences.

San Diego struck first behind the leg of All-Pro kicker Jocelyn Charette, who drilled a 43-yard field goal to give the Rebellion an early 3-0 advantage.

The score remained 3-0 for much of the first half as both defenses traded blows. Just before halftime, Rebellion star quarterback Danny Trainor engineered a critical red-zone drive and capped it with a quarterback keeper to extend the lead to 10-0.

That would prove to be more than enough for the league's top-ranked defense.

Led by defensive lineman Sabrina Kessler and linebacker duo Brittani Lusain and Katie Claxton, the Rebellion consistently disrupted Utah's triple option rhythm. The Falconz repeatedly moved the ball into scoring position, only to see drives end with turnovers.

The defining moment came moments into the second half. At 11:21 of the third quarter, Katie Claxton stepped in front of a Utah pass and returned it for a Pick-IX. After the extra point, San Diego led 20-0 and firmly seized control of the game.

The defensive battle continued through the final whistle as the Rebellion suffocated Utah's offense and secured a 20-0 victory, earning the franchise's second trip to the IX Cup Championship Game.

Spartans Surge Past Prodigy to Claim Eastern Crown

While defense ruled the West, the East eventually turned into an offensive showcase.

A one-hour weather delay pushed kickoff back nearly 90 minutes in Washington, D.C., but once the game began, both teams wasted no time delivering playoff football at its finest.

The opening quarter belonged entirely to the defenses. Both offenses struggled to find momentum, with punts dominating the early possessions as the first quarter ended scoreless.

The breakthrough came in the second quarter.

Texas Elite defensive back Crystal Daniels intercepted Prodigy quarterback Ashley Clark, giving the Spartans prime field position. The offense capitalized immediately, punching in the game's first touchdown on a goal-line run by fullback Amber Kimbrough. Penalties continued to plague Washington throughout the evening, an issue that had followed the Prodigy all season long.

Meanwhile, Texas Elite's defense became increasingly disruptive. Defensive verteran Deana Guidry wreaked havoc in the backfield, joiuined by defensive ends Whitney Palmer and Waynicia Thomas, generating constant pressure and forcing Washington into difficult situations.

Late in the first half, league touchdown receptions leader Maria Jackson extended the Spartans' advantage with a touchdown catch from quarterback Michelle Angel, pushing the lead to 13-0.

Washington's Solina Pascual did everything she could to keep her team within striking distance. The standout defender was all over the field and blocked one of three Texas Elite extra-point attempts on the evening.

The Spartans delivered another blow before halftime. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, star running back Tara Thomas powered into the end zone with 1:31 remaining, giving Texas Elite complete momentum heading into the break.

The second half belonged entirely to the defending champions. Angel continued her stellar postseason run, throwing three touchdown passes on the night, including scoring connections with Summer McNeal and Maria Jackson.

One of the game's biggest storylines was the return of Prodigy star receiver Shaquanda Gainey, who announced her return in style with a fourth-quarter touchdown reception.

As the offense kept rolling, the Spartans defense overwhelmed Washington, shutting down the Prodigy passing attack and controlling the game from start to finish. When the final whistle sounded, Texas Elite had secured its second consecutive Eastern Conference Championship and remained unbeaten at 8-0.

IX Cup Championship Is Set

The race to Frisco is complete. The 7-1 San Diego Rebellion, champions of the Western Conference, will face the undefeated 8-0 Texas Elite Spartans, champions of the Eastern Conference, in the 2026 WNFC IX Cup Championship Game.

The game will be played Sunday, June 21 at 4PM ET, at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas and will air live nationally on ESPN2.
