The WNFC Playoffs continued Friday night, and the Western Conference delivered everything fans could have hoped for.
Nearly 10,000 viewers tuned in on Victory+ to witness two thrilling playoff matchups that showcased dominant defenses, superstar performances, and another instant classic as teams battled for a spot in the Western Conference Championship.
San Diego Rebellion 30, Los Angeles Legends 0
The San Diego Rebellion struck first and never looked back.
On a pivotal third-and-short near the goal line on their first drive, quarterback Danny Trainor escaped what appeared to be a sure sack and improvised one of the most exciting plays of the postseason. As the pocket collapsed, Trainor flipped the ball to star running back Kesz Wesley, who did the rest, powering into the end zone for the game's first score.
The opening quarter felt like a heavyweight fight.
The Los Angeles Legends generated several explosive plays and converted key downs early, but penalties and turnovers repeatedly stalled promising drives. Every time the Legends appeared ready to build momentum, the Rebellion defense answered.
San Diego's defensive front, and star playmaker Brittani Lusain were outstanding from start to finish, controlling the line of scrimmage and bottling up one of the league's most dangerous playmakers, star running back Jasmin Gamble.
The Rebellion extended their lead before halftime when All-Pro kicker Jocelyn Charette, who entered the postseason with three field goals on the season, drilled a 36-yard field goal to put San Diego ahead 10-0. That would be more than enough.
The second half belonged entirely to the Rebellion defense.
San Diego completely overwhelmed the Legends offense, pitching a shutout and never allowing Los Angeles to find a rhythm. The Rebellion continued to attack in all phases of the game, adding points in a variety of ways, including a spectacular punt return touchdown by Alicia Zappia-Neeley.
Balanced offense. Dominant defense. Special teams excellence. The Rebellion checked every box and advanced to the Western Conference Championship with an emphatic statement victory.
Utah Falconz 22, Kansas City Glory 19
If Game One was about control, Game Two was pure chaos.
In another instant classic that came down to the final minute, the Utah Falconz survived a heroic performance from Kansas City superstar Kassidy Snowden to earn a trip to the Western Conference Championship.
For much of the evening, Snowden was simply unstoppable.
The WNFC star did it all for the Glory, playing multiple positions, including quarterback, and scoring all three of Kansas City's touchdowns. Snowden led the team defensively, made game-changing plays on offense, and once again showed why she remains one of the most dynamic athletes in women's football.
With starting quarterback Lydia Morgan sidelined due to injury, veteran triple-option quarterback Louise Bean stepped in to guide the Falconz offense. Utah relied on its trademark formula of controlling time of possession and leaning on the powerful running of star back Gina Mondragon.
The Falconz defense also deserves enormous credit. Facing the league's leading rusher, Maria Fautali, Utah bottled up the explosive running back and kept her out of the end zone throughout the contest.
Late in the second quarter, Snowden recovered a fumble that led to a key Kansas City red-zone drive, helping keep the Glory within striking distance heading into halftime.
As they have all season, Utah continued to capitalize on its aggressive approach to extra points, converting crucial two-point attempts that would ultimately prove to be the difference.
In the second half, Brenna Morris took over quarterback duties for portions of the game before Snowden once again stepped into the Wildcat formation and took control. Snowden scored her second touchdown in the third quarter before finding the end zone again late in the fourth quarter, giving Kansas City a 19-14 lead with just 3:32 remaining.
It looked like the Glory might complete the upset.
Instead, Utah delivered one final championship-caliber drive. With less than a minute remaining and their season hanging in the balance, the Falconz marched into the red zone. Then came the play of the night.
Utah executed a perfectly timed hook-and-lateral that broke loose for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd at McCarthey Stadium. The Falconz followed it with a successful two-point conversion to reclaim the lead.
Kansas City had one final opportunity, but rookie defensive back Bergen Meyer sealed the victory with her second interception of the night, sending the Falconz faithful into celebration.
