Take It Away: Desiree Conner Named 2026 WNFC Shutdown Defensive Back of the Year

Six interceptions. One Pick IX. A season that put Desiree Conner at the top of the WNFC’s leaderboard.

The Atlanta Truth defensive back made opposing passing attacks pay in 2026, earning WNFC Shutdown Defensive Back of the Year honors. For an athlete who began playing football in 2024, the recognition marks an impressive rise from newcomer to one of the league’s most dangerous defenders.

Conner finished the regular season with a league-leading six interceptions, collecting 132 return yards and a longest interception return of 41 yards. One of those takeaways ended in the end zone for a Pick IX, the WNFC’s nine-point defensive touchdown. Her production gave Atlanta six opportunities to take possession away from opponents, and, on one of them, put points directly on the board.

Her contributions extended to special teams, where she handled 12 punt returns for 49 yards, including a longest return of 24 yards. Whether defending a pass or fielding a punt, Conner gave the Truth another athlete capable of turning the ball’s arrival into an opportunity.

Long before she was intercepting passes, Conner was competing on the basketball court and running track. Athletics had always been part of her life, and football had always held her attention. She loved watching the game, even though she had not grown up playing it.

After graduating college, she decided to explore that interest for herself. Taking a chance on football meant stepping into unfamiliar territory, learning a new sport, and being willing to start again. That decision opened the door to a competitive side of herself she was still discovering.

As her understanding of football grew, so did her desire to improve. She wanted to become a stronger athlete, a better teammate, and someone others could look up to. What began as a personal challenge developed into a commitment to contribute wherever her team needed her.

That perspective shapes how she views this award. Conner credits the preparation and work shared by her coaches and teammates, recognizing that individual production grows out of a collective effort. The honor celebrates her season, but her motivation remains rooted in Atlanta’s success.

“The drive for me is to be the best I can be for my team in all aspects of this game,” Conner said.

Away from football, Conner works as a policy administration specialist in business and finance. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Limestone University, building a professional life alongside the athletic career she chose to pursue after college.

Her story is still taking shape, but her impact is already clear. In 2024, Desiree Conner took a chance on playing the sport she loved to watch. In 2026, she led the WNFC in interceptions and earned the votes of owners and teams across the league.

She stepped outside her comfort zone and gave opposing offenses plenty of reason to leave theirs.
