WNFC Week 4 Highlights
By Derek Fleming, staff writer, WNFC
Alabama Fire at Atlanta Phoenix
FInal Score: 0-29
Play of the Game: Up by 7 in the second quarter, the Atlanta Phoenix offense was struggling to find a rhythm. After getting pushed back on a penalty, the Atlanta offense was facing a second-and-22 on the Fire 30 yard-line when quarterback Melyse Brown unloaded a deep pass that was caught between two defenders for the second score of the day.
Philly Phantomz at Kansas City Glory
Final Score: 0-26
Play of the Game: Kansas City Glory placekicker Sheila Sickau lined up for a 28-yard field goal, her second attempt of the day. After knocking the kick through, Sickau realized that the Kansas City bench had called a time-out, effectively icing their own kicker. Sickau was undeterred, banging the ball through on her second attempt to give the Glory an early 6-point lead on the way to a landslide victory.
Texas Elite Spartans at Mississippi Lady Panthers
Final Score: 49-14
Play of the Game: Despite the lopsided final score, the Mississippi Lady Panthers became the first team to score on the Texas Elite Spartans during the regular season in over 2 years. Panthers backup QB Amanda Howsan connected with quarterback Regina Jackson on a trick play near the end of the first half. Jackson dodged defenders on her way to an 85-yard touchdown.
Utah Falconz at Las Vegas Silver Stars
Final Score: 18-21
Play of the Game: Trailing by four points midway through the fourth quarter, the Silver Stars defense swallowed Utah running back Sara Galica and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Silver Stars. The turnover set up the game-winning drive when QB Cindylou Rasiang found a wide-open Denajha Kie on a fourth-down pass play to score a touchdown.
Denver Bandits at Oregon Ravens
Final Score: 7-0
Play of the Game: Nursing a 7-0 lead after one-quarter of play, the Denver Bandits defense shut down the Ravens on the first play of the second quarter when Oregon quarterback Danielle Trainor fumbled the snap on first down from the Bandits 13 yard-line. Denver recovered the ball to put a stop to one of the most promising drives of the day for Oregon.
Phoenix Prowlers at Seattle Majestics
Final Score: 7-32
Play of the Game: On the Prowlers first possession of the game, linebacker Aryan Sjodin hit a scrambling Danielle Harrison at quarterback. After collecting a low snap, Harrison was sacked by Sjodin, who also forced the ball loose for a strip-sack. Seattle scored the game’s first points on the next possession.
