NCAA Flag Football Advancement Strengthens the Future of Women’s Football

The Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC) is celebrating a meaningful step forward for the game. This week, Division I representatives voted to add flag football to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program, with Division II and Division III set to vote next.

The Emerging Sports for Women program is designed to expand athletic opportunities for women and support the long-term growth of sports toward NCAA championship status. From the WNFC league office, the excitement is rooted in what this moment represents: a stronger, clearer pipeline for women in football.

As access to football continues to grow at the youth and collegiate levels, so does the depth, skill, and preparedness of women choosing to continue their football journeys beyond college. Flag football’s expansion creates more on-ramps into the sport, developing football IQ, athleticism, and competitive experience while reinforcing the reality that football does not end at graduation.

“The more women who play football, the stronger the entire ecosystem becomes,” says Odessa Jenkins - WNFC CEO. “This momentum helps ensure that talented athletes see professional football, both flag and tackle as a real and viable next step.”

The WNFC is committed to serving as the professional destination for women who want to keep playing the game at the highest level. As collegiate flag football grows, it complements women’s tackle football by broadening participation, sharpening skills, and expanding the pool of elite athletes prepared to compete professionally.

This is progress built on opportunity, access, and belief in women’s football. And it’s another signal that the pathway from college to the pros is not only possible, but continuing to strengthen.
